Arthur Todd Holroyd 1806-1997

 

Youngest child of Stephen Todd Holroyd and Elizabeth Lofthouse. Born 1 December 1806 in London. Educated at Ripon Grammar School, Studied medicine at University of Edinburgh and Christ’s College in Cambridge. He married Sophia Rachel , born 1810 in Durham. Married 6 June 1830 in Whitburn, Durham. His wife died 1868 in Barnet, London. 

They had a daughter Emily Sophia, born 2 May 1831 in Charles Street, Marlebone, London.

Christening, 9 Augustus 1831 All Souls, Marylebone, London. She died 7 January 1912, Yokohama, Japan of heart failure.

He studied Italian in Rome and in Egypt explored above the second cataract, and became the first European to cross the Bayuda desert to Khartoum and the first Englishman to visit  Kordofan. Familiar with Arabic he travelled through Sinai, Palestine and Syria. In 1838 in London he read a paper on his Kordofan expedition and was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. After he emigrated to New Zealand in 1843, he emigrated to Australian Sydney in 1844. He remarried in 5 August 1868 Elizabeth Armstrong in Parramatta

He died at Sherwood Scrubs, Merrylands, on 15 June 1887,and buried in Rookwood Cemetery.
